New Amendments Following Reform of New Bankruptcy Laws

Definitions, New York Bankruptcy Court Districts

A few of the most common words and phrases used by the New York Courts appear below. Be aware of variations between common usage and legal interpretation. The legal interpretation is subject to change in response to statutory amendments, case opinions, and changes in local rules.

Recent changes and amendments include: 1) Notice to Attorneys 03-09 - Notice of Amended Official Bankruptcy Forms and Amendments to Bankruptcy Rules Effective December 1, 2003, 2) Notice to Attorneys 03-08 - Notice of electronic availability of case file information dated 11/14/03, 3) Notice to Attorneys 03-07 regarding privacy changes effective December 1, 2003, and 4) Notice to Attorneys 03-06 regarding privacy changes effective December 1, 2003.

Daily operation and administration procedures for New York Bankruptcy Courts are determined by the Administrative Office of US Courts. The judicial power of Judges is determined by Federal Law, which is derived primarily from the US Constitution and the US Code. Additional clarification of judicial power is provided by court decisions, Federal rules, and Local Rules.
