The United States Bankruptcy Court for Western District of
New York has two divisional offices and serves 17 counties in the
western portion of the state. The 2003 case volume was divided among the

Jurisdiction / Coverage - The Western District covers the counties of Allegheny, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua,
Chemung, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Ontario, Orleans,
Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates County. In general, to qualify for filing, and individual
must be a state resident for the preceding 180 days and maintain a domicile within the county. US
citizenship is not required. Foreign citizens may qualify under jurisdictional rules based on property ownership
in some circumstance.
The Western District provides electronic case filing and online forms, petitions,
statements of financial affairs, and schedules. Also, local rules and official instructions for filing
Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 are available. Be aware
